2 Samuel 7.4-5a,12-14a,16 | Romans 4.13,16-18,22 | Matthew 1.18-25

Today is the liturgical feast of the glorious Saint Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus, the most chaste husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Universal Patron of the Church.

Today the evangelist Matthew tells us about the announcement of the angel of the Lord to Joseph in a dream. The messenger explained to Mary's betrothed that She was the Virgin Who would be with child and would bear the Emmanuel, God is with us, through the Holy Spirit.

Before this explanation, Joseph had decided to divorce Mary quietly, when he realized that she was with child and that he was not his.

After this explanation, Joseph did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife Mary into his home.

When we are going through difficult situations and we cannot understand anything, let us not make hasty decisions, but let us pray and ask God to explain His plan of love to us. And, like Joseph, let us accept God's will.

Today the second book of Samuel tells us about God’s response to King David through the prophet Nathan. David wanted to build a house for God to dwell in. But God said that it would be He who would build a house for David. God would raise up, after David, his heir, who would be confirmed in royalty forever. God said that He would be a father to him, and that he would be a son to God.

For us Christians, this heir of King David is Jesus, the Son of God, who is the adopted son of Joseph!

Let us rejoice in the Lord, who fulfills His promise of salvation!

Today the apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans about Abraham's faith (which God credited to him as righteousness) and God's promise to his descendants. God made Abraham the father of many nations.

Comparing Abraham to Joseph, Jesus' adoptive father also had faith and was righteous by God; Joseph is the Universal Patron of the Church, the father of Christ’s disciples, present in all nations.

Joseph loved and cared for God the Son made Man and for the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Wife. He, who on earth protected the domestic Church of Nazareth, intercedes in heaven for the Church in all nations.

Joseph is a model of a God-fearing, just and chaste man, of a father, of a husband, of a worker. Joseph was fundamental in the mystery of the humanization of God the Son, in the formation of His character. We have much to learn from Joseph. Let us trust in his intercession. Long live Saint Joseph!
