Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8 / 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 / Luke 5:1-11
We begin, with the whole Church, the fifth week of Ordinary Time.
Today the evangelist Luke tells us about the call of Simon Peter by Jesus after the episode of the miraculous catch of fish.
The fishermen had worked hard all night and had caught nothing.
Jesus was preaching on the shore of Lake Genesaret. He was in Simon Peter's boat and the crowds were on the shore. Then Jesus told Simon to put out into deeper water and lower their nets.
He obeyed Jesus and they caught a great number of fish. Simon and his companions - among them the brothers James and John - were astonished.
Recognizing that he was a sinner, Simon asked Jesus to depart from him. Instead, Jesus encouraged Simon and told him that he would be a catching men from that moment on.
The evangelist concludes by saying that they left everything and followed Jesus.
More than talking about the lake, the boat, the nets and the fish, this gospel points to the evangelizing and missionary action of Jesus and the apostles in the world. It is an urgent task, fulfilled in obedience, carried out by many hands, with moments of apparent failure, but destined for success!
We often feel unworthy of Christ's call, but we must act like Simon Peter and his companions, trusting in God's love.
Today the prophet Isaiah tells us about his own call by the Lord. Recognizing himself as a man of unclean lips, during a mystical vision, the prophet was purged of his sin by a seraph who touched his mouth with an ember taken from the altar. He then accepted the Lord's missionary call.
At Mass, by receiving the Eucharist in the mouth, we are purged of our sins and can, like Isaiah, accept the call that the Lord makes to us.
Today, in his first letter to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul tells us about the appearances of the resurrected Jesus, especially to the apostles and to himself. Recognizing himself as a persecutor of the Church of God, Paul extolled the Grace of God that allowed his conversion. From that moment on, the apostle began to work hard to preach the Gospel.
Let us keep the Gospel as it was preached to us by the apostles and, like Paul, let us strive to transmit It to others with fidelity.
