Hebrews 12:1-4 / Mark 5:21-43

Today the evangelist Mark tells us about the healing of a woman and the resurrection of a girl by Jesus.

The woman had been afflicting with hemorrhages for 12 years. She had spent all she had on many doctors and her condition grew worse. With faith, the woman touched Jesus' cloak in the crowd. And she was healed by a power that had gone out from Jesus. Then the woman fell down and told Him the whole truth. And Jesus told the woman that her faith had saved her.

The girl was 12 years old and her father, Jairus, who was one of the synagogue officials, asked Jesus to lay His hand on his daughter so that the girl would get well and live. While Jesus was on the way, Jairus was informed of his daughter's death. Jesus told the synagogue official to have faith and not to be afraid. When they arrived at Jairus’ house, Jesus told the people who were crying that the girl had not died, but was asleeping. Accompanied by the apostles Peter, James and John, Jesus took Jairus’ daughter by the hand and told her to arise. The girl arose and walked. And everyone was astounded.

By healing the woman and raising the girl from the dead, God was showing the Jews that Jesus was the promised Messiah. We must always trust in Jesus and promote health and life for all, even if we cannot stop sickness and death.

Today the author of the Letter to the Hebrews speaks to us about the struggle against sin, for the sake of the joy of the fulfillment of the promise. The author speaks of the example of Jesus Christ Himself and of the cloud of great characters of the First Testament.

Let us allow Jesus to finish the work of faith that He began in us. And in our struggle against sin, let us resist to the point of shedding blood, as Jesus and the martyrs did, through our faith in the resurrection.

In this Holy Week, today we arrive at the Easter Triduum, with Holy Thursday, celebrating the Institution of the Eucharist, at the Last Supper, and remembering the Washing of the Feet, love made humble service. We begin the thirty-second week of Ordinary Time with Mother Church. In two Sundays, the Liturgical Year will conclude with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. In 2025, the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, on November 9th, coincided with Sunday, the Lord's Day. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, presided over by Pope Leo XIV. It is the oldest church in the West, inaugurated in the year 324, during the pontificate of Pope St. Sylvester I. It is the most important of the four papal basilicas in Rome (the others are St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and the Basilica of St. Mary Major). Five ecumenical councils have taken place there. She is considered the ecumenical Mother Church.
