Hebrews 2:14-18 / Mark 1:29-39

At the beginning of Ordinary Time, we are meditating on the Gospel according to Mark, which has as its particularity the so-called "messianic secret", through which Jesus gradually reveals His identity as the Son of God. Jesus wants His disciples to discover that He is the Messiah from the inside out, and not from the outside in, through living with Him and His attitudes, and not through the imposition of truths from above.

Today the evangelist Mark tells us about the cure of Simon Peter's mother-in-law and many other people by Jesus, in addition to the expulsion of many demons who wanted to reveal His "messianic secret". The evangelist speaks of Jesus' prayer at dawn in a deserted place, when He decides to go to other places to preach. Mark concludes by saying that Jesus went into the synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout Galilee.

At that time - as today - we see how sick people are in body, mind and heart. Illness prevents people from living fully. It is beautiful to see Jesus' sensitivity to the sick, the love and patience with which He treated them. It is not enough to just talk nicely; we need to have compassion and solidarity. As for evil, represented by demons, we cannot make concessions. It is urgent to free people who are prevented from thinking and acting for themselves. And finally, may our week be filled with encounters with God in prayer, which lead us to speak of His love to everyone we meet.

Today the author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus is a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people.

Let us overcome fear. Let us accept Jesus' help in tests. He can help us because He Himself became man and knows the tests that human beings go through. Let us trust in Jesus!

In this Holy Week, today we arrive at the Easter Triduum, with Holy Thursday, celebrating the Institution of the Eucharist, at the Last Supper, and remembering the Washing of the Feet, love made humble service. A short while ago, the Institution of the Ministerial Priesthood was celebrated, with Priest's Day, and the consecration of the Holy Oils for the anointing of catechumens, for the anointing of those being confirmed and ordained ministers (deacons, priests and bishops), and for the anointing of the sick. Today the Evangelist John speaks to us about the Washing of the Feet during the Supper. Jesus - the Lord and Master - washed the feet of His disciples, giving them the example so that they would do the same thing that He did. The evangelist emphasizes that Jesus was demonstrating all His love for His people in the world. We begin the thirty-second week of Ordinary Time with Mother Church. In two Sundays, the Liturgical Year will conclude with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. In 2025, the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, on November 9th, coincided with Sunday, the Lord's Day. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, presided over by Pope Leo XIV. It is the oldest church in the West, inaugurated in the year 324, during the pontificate of Pope St. Sylvester I. It is the most important of the four papal basilicas in Rome (the others are St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and the Basilica of St. Mary Major).
