1 John 5:5-13 / Luke 5:12-16

This Sunday marks the end of the Christmas Season, with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Today the evangelist Luke tells us about the cleaning of a man full of leprosy by Jesus. The man believed in Jesus' power to clean and so he fell prostrate and asked Him for his cleaning. The evangelist says that Jesus wished to clean that man, that He used His power to do so, and that the leprosy left him immediately. Luke says that Jesus did not seek fame, ordering the cleaned man not to tell anyone. Despite this, the report about him spread all the more and great crowds sought Him to listen to Him and be cured of their ailments. Then the evangelist concludes by saying that Jesus withdrew to deserted places to pray.

We can approach Jesus with confidence, and fall prostrate and asking Him to cure our ailments, because God gave Him the power on earth to do so. Jesus only wishes what is best for us. Let us speak about Jesus to the sick and help them receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick with faith. And, like Jesus, let us flee from fame and devote ourselves to prayer.

Today the apostle and evangelist John tells us in his first letter that who believes that Jesus is the Son of God is the victor over the world. John says that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. And John concludes by saying that who believes in the name of the Son of God has eternal life.

How important our faith in Jesus is! Through Him we are victor over the world - the difficulties of the present time - and we have eternal life! In other words, with Jesus we have everything, we lack nothing! Let us strengthen our faith in the name of the Son of God!

Today we take a break from Ordinary Time, which will return after the Solemnity of Pentecost in the month of June. In this Holy Week, today we arrive at the Easter Triduum, with Holy Thursday, celebrating the Institution of the Eucharist, at the Last Supper, and remembering the Washing of the Feet, love made humble service. A short while ago, the Institution of the Ministerial Priesthood was celebrated, with Priest's Day, and the consecration of the Holy Oils for the anointing of catechumens, for the anointing of those being confirmed and ordained ministers (deacons, priests and bishops), and for the anointing of the sick. Today the Evangelist John speaks to us about the Washing of the Feet during the Supper. Jesus - the Lord and Master - washed the feet of His disciples, giving them the example so that they would do the same thing that He did. The evangelist emphasizes that Jesus was demonstrating all His love for His people in the world. We begin the thirty-second week of Ordinary Time with Mother Church. In two Sundays, the Liturgical Year will conclude with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. In 2025, the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, on November 9th, coincided with Sunday, the Lord's Day. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, presided over by Pope Leo XIV. It is the oldest church in the West, inaugurated in the year 324, during the pontificate of Pope St. Sylvester I. It is the most important of the four papal basilicas in Rome (the others are St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and the Basilica of St. Mary Major). Five ecumenical councils have taken place there. She is considered the ecumenical Mother Church.
