Jeremiah 23:5-8 / Matthew 1:18-25

Christmas is coming! We are preparing for the solemnity of the birth of the Savior Jesus, which will be in a few days.

Today, the evangelist Matthew tells us about the announcement of the angel of the Lord to Joseph in a dream. The messenger explained to Mary's betrothed that She was the virgin Who would be with child and would bear the Emmanuel, God is with us, through the Holy Spirit.

Before this explanation, Joseph had decided to divorce Mary quietly, when he realized that she was with child and that he was not his.

After this explanation, Joseph did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife Mary into his home.

When we are going through difficult situations and we cannot understand anything, let us not make hasty decisions, but let us pray and ask God to explain His plan of love to us. And, like Joseph, let us accept God's will.

Today the prophet Jeremiah tells us about the Lord's promise to raise up righteous shoot to David, with the name "The Lord our Justice." He would be a wise king, doing what is just and right in the land. He would save Israel so that he would dwell in security.

For us Christians, Jesus is this righteous shoot from David. He is "The Lord our Justice." He is our Savior, the wise King who does what is right in the land.

Let us prepare to celebrate with joy the birth of the Savior Jesus.

In this Holy Week, today we arrive at the Easter Triduum, with Holy Thursday, celebrating the Institution of the Eucharist, at the Last Supper, and remembering the Washing of the Feet, love made humble service. A short while ago, the Institution of the Ministerial Priesthood was celebrated, with Priest's Day, and the consecration of the Holy Oils for the anointing of catechumens, for the anointing of those being confirmed and ordained ministers (deacons, priests and bishops), and for the anointing of the sick. Today the Evangelist John speaks to us about the Washing of the Feet during the Supper. Jesus - the Lord and Master - washed the feet of His disciples, giving them the example so that they would do the same thing that He did. We begin the thirty-second week of Ordinary Time with Mother Church. In two Sundays, the Liturgical Year will conclude with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. In 2025, the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, on November 9th, coincided with Sunday, the Lord's Day. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, presided over by Pope Leo XIV. It is the oldest church in the West, inaugurated in the year 324, during the pontificate of Pope St. Sylvester I. It is the most important of the four papal basilicas in Rome (the others are St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and the Basilica of St. Mary Major).
